The Ghosting Epidemic: Why It’s NOT Okay in the Business World
Hello??? Where are you?
Okay, let’s get real for a minute. As a business owner – especially in the creative field of personal brand photography – I see emails disappear into the ether ALL. THE. TIME. I’m not talking about a quick “thanks, but no thanks” – hey, I get it, sometimes it’s just not a fit. But the full-on GHOSTING? Seriously?
Picture this:
You spend time crafting a thoughtful inquiry to another business, excited about a potential collaboration. You outline your ideas, your vision, maybe even drop in some personalised touches. And then… crickets. Days…weeks…nothing.
Look, I know we’re all busy. But come on, guys! A basic level of professional courtesy costs nothing. Even a short “Not interested at this time” reply acknowledges my time and effort.
This Isn’t Just About Hurt Feelings (Though Those Exist!)
Ghosting isn’t just rude; it’s straight-up bad business. Here’s why:
- Missed Opportunities: What if my brilliant idea was THE thing your business needed? Ghosting means you’ll never know.
- Reputation Damage: Word gets around in the small business world. Ghosting leaves a lasting impression – and not the good kind.
- Burning Bridges: You never know when our paths might cross again. A simple “no” today could preserve a potential future collaboration.
Let’s Change the Culture
I challenge everyone in the business world to do better. Let’s commit to ditching the ghosting habit. Instead:
- Be Timely: Even a quick response shows respect.
- Be Honest: A short “no thanks” is better than silence.
- Be Empathetic: Put yourself in the sender’s shoes.
Remember, we’re all trying to build great businesses here. A little professional courtesy goes a long way. Let’s ditch the disappearing act and create a more respectful business environment for everyone!
